Why Large and Giant Breeds Are More Prone to Joint Issues

If you have a Labrador, a German Shepherd, a Great Dane, or any dog on the larger end of the scale, you've probably heard some version of "big dogs just have bad joints." It's said so often it starts to sound like folklore. But there's real, well-documented science behind it — and understanding it actually helps explain why size-appropriate support matters more for these breeds, not less.

It's Not One Thing — It's Genetics, Growth Rate, and Weight, Together

Hip dysplasia (HD) and elbow dysplasia (ED) are the two most common developmental joint disorders in dogs, and both are known to be especially prevalent in large and giant breeds.<sup>1</sup> They're not simple, single-cause conditions — research points to a combination of genetic factors and environmental factors, including growth rate, body weight, and exercise type, working together.<sup>1</sup>

The genetics side: hip dysplasia is heritable, with studies estimating heritability in the range of roughly 0.11 to 0.68 depending on the breed and population studied<sup>2</sup> — meaning a meaningful portion of a dog's risk is inherited, and it varies significantly from one breed line to another. Large-breed dogs have been selectively bred for size and structure in ways that, historically, didn't always prioritize joint conformation.

The growth-rate side: large and giant breed puppies grow far faster and reach a far greater adult size than small breeds, putting more developmental stress on joints that are still forming. Interestingly, one large study noted that males were more frequently affected by elbow dysplasia than females, possibly due to their faster growth rate and greater overall size<sup>1</sup> — a detail that reinforces just how directly growth speed and joint development are connected.

The weight side: more body mass sitting on the same joint surfaces simply means more cumulative stress over a dog's lifetime — a straightforward mechanical reality that compounds with genetic predisposition rather than replacing it.

The Numbers Are Real — and They're Breed-Specific

A retrospective study tracking hip dysplasia prevalence in five common large breeds found real, measurable differences by breed. Looking at the period from 1995 to 2016, prevalence was recorded at:

  • German Shepherds: as high as 46% in the earlier period, dropping to 18% more recently
  • Bernese Mountain Dogs: 21%, dropping to 12%
  • Golden Retrievers: 25%, dropping to 9%
  • Labrador Retrievers: 16%, dropping to 3%<sup>3</sup>

The good news buried in that data: with decades of selective breeding and radiographic screening programs, prevalence has been trending downward across most major breeds.<sup>3,4</sup> The less good news: even at the lower end, these numbers are still meaningfully higher than in most small-breed dogs, and hip and elbow dysplasia remain common enough that if you own a large or giant breed, it's worth actively watching for — not something to assume won't happen to your dog.
