"Red light therapy" gets thrown around a lot right now — for skin, for muscles, for pretty much everything. So it's fair to ask: is this real, or is it just the latest wellness trend wearing a science costume?
We wanted a straight answer before we built a company around it. Here's what we found.
It Didn't Start as a Wellness Product. It Started in Space.
In the 1990s, NASA funded research into LED lighting for a very unglamorous reason: growing plants on long space missions. Researchers built high-intensity red and near-infrared LEDs to help plants photosynthesize in a spacecraft, where traditional grow-lights used too much power and gave off too much heat.
While working with that light day after day, researchers noticed something they weren't looking for: cuts and skin irritation on their own hands seemed to heal faster than expected. NASA followed up with funded studies specifically investigating wound healing — and later research, published in the peer-reviewed literature, found that Navy personnel treated with this same category of LED light showed meaningfully faster healing in musculoskeletal injuries and lacerations than those who weren't.<sup>1,2</sup>
That's the real origin story. Not a supplement company. Not a wellness influencer. A space agency, trying to grow lettuce, that stumbled onto something it didn't expect.
The Same Light Is Already Standard in Veterinary Medicine
Here's the part that surprised us most: this isn't a new idea in veterinary care. Photobiomodulation — the technical name for red and near-infrared light therapy — is already a recognized tool in veterinary rehabilitation. The American Animal Hospital Association describes it as a modality regularly used for chronic arthritis, soft tissue injury, and post-surgical recovery in dogs.<sup>3</sup>
If your dog has ever had laser therapy at a rehab clinic, this is almost certainly the same underlying technology — just administered by a vet, on a clinic schedule, usually at $50–$75 a session.
What the Research Actually Shows — and What It Doesn't
We think it matters to be precise here, because a lot of pet health marketing isn't.
Two peer-reviewed, controlled studies specifically looked at photobiomodulation in dogs with osteoarthritis:
- A randomized, double-blind trial in dogs with bilateral hip osteoarthritis compared light therapy against a standard anti-inflammatory medication over three weeks, and found better outcomes in several pain and function measures for the light therapy group.<sup>4</sup>
- A separate randomized, placebo-controlled trial in dogs with elbow osteoarthritis found improvements in lameness and pain measures, along with reduced need for anti-inflammatory medication, after a six-week protocol.<sup>5</sup>
Those are real, meaningful signals — but we want to be honest about their limits. These were small studies (one involved 20 dogs), using specific research protocols that may differ in wavelength, dose, or schedule from any single consumer device, including ours. They support the underlying science of photobiomodulation for canine joint health. They are not a clinical trial of this specific belt, and we're not going to pretend otherwise.
Why We Think of It as "Closing a Gap"
Cells repair the everyday wear on joints using energy generated by mitochondria — the small structures inside cells responsible for producing that energy. As dogs age, or carry excess weight, or deal with breed-related joint stress, that repair process can start falling behind the damage. We think of that shortfall as a kind of cellular energy debt: not damage exactly, but a widening gap between wear and repair.
Photobiomodulation works because those same mitochondria absorb red and near-infrared light directly, which appears to support their energy output.<sup>1,3</sup> It's not a drug, and it doesn't mask discomfort the way a pain medication does — it's aimed at supporting the body's own repair process.

What we can say is this: it's real science, applied consistently, in a form your dog can actually tolerate — and for most dogs and owners, that consistency is the part that was missing before.
